Wiener Blond
Bis in der Früh
('Until the early hours
of the morning')
For the past eleven years now, Verena Doublier and Sebastian Radon, as the duo Wiener Blond, have voiced their protest against the rather deceptive cliché of the Viennese tendency to indulge in wine-induced euphoria. They belong to the so-called 'new Viennese chanson' scene, and address some of the main issues of everyday life in Vienna in a charming, curmudgeonly and 'no holds barred' way; even sacred Austrian cows such as 'Spritzwein', 'rise e bisi' and the Viennese cuisine, which consists primarily of stodgy 'Mehlspeisen' dishes, do not escape their in part biting, in part utterly ridiculous lyrics.
With their unique blend of melancholy, melodies and ministry officialdom, they flirt with absurdities and abysses, with the madness of everyday life and with old-time pub nostalgia. Their current programme Bis in der Früh was inspired by the vibrant life in Austria's capital, a city that is somewhere in between east and west, in a continuous flow of transformation yet also permanently trapped by the ongoing compromises in this lively in-between space. With their grooves, melodies and stories, Wiener Blond make the crisis danceable.
