Ulla Meinecke is the grande dame of poetic German pop music. Her great songs are part of its canon, and of course, she continues to sing them in her concerts with a voice that has lost none of its power and in refreshing arrangements. However, the hits are also always in the good company of new compositions, which is again the case in her latest programme Bessere Zeiten ('Better times'). That is indeed something we all wish for, and even if Ulla Meinecke cannot vocally conjure them up with her lyrical love songs and everyday irony, the singer's new songs nevertheless provide moments of relief and relaxation. With literally unheard of love songs and stories about the special in the everyday, she once again proves herself to be a master in the art of finding precisely the right words. The lyrics written by this poetic songwriter, who calls herself a 'hardcore romantic', are about beginnings, small escapes, major dramas and strong ends. Together with the arranger and multi-instrumentalist Reinmar Henschke and Volker Holly Schlott on the saxophone and flute, she creates a wonderful evening that expresses the longing for 'better times' in the form of songs – yet also alleviates it a little bit.
