Tampopo
Magical noodles
A film by Jûzô Itami
starring Ken Watanabe, Tsutomu Yamazaki, Nobuko Miyamoto and others
A coincidence leads the two truckers Goro and Gun to the young widow Tampopo's small soup shop. It is not exactly a success, and the two decide to help Tampopo to spruce up her shop and to create the perfect ramen soup. Together, they leave no stone unturned to elicit the secrets of their noodle soups from other cooks. The search for the perfect noodle soup recipe celebrated in the film becomes a question about life as such. Gangsters, employees rioting after work, lorry drivers who view themselves as modern time cowboys – in different episodes, all of these are brought together in the microcosm of the small restaurant. With plenty of wit and a portion of irony, the iconic director Jûzô Itami scrutinises the oddities of Japanese society.
