Eine Gemeinschaft
unter Druck
Europa in unruhigen Zeiten
('A Community
under pressure.
Europe in troubled times')
Neuhardenberg Speech
by Jean Asselborn
Many global developments, which might soon include the USA's retreat from the western defence community, mean that the EU finds itself facing completely new questions. What is the state of the European security situation? What are its costs, its strategies? Who will help Ukraine in future? Whilst these questions suggest that the EU should move closer together, there are strong movements within the bloc to weaken it, or to even dissolve it completely. Is this contradictory, or do these phenomena belong together? Has the EU itself contributed to the buildup of serious discontent in the Member State populations? Is the destabilisation of the Union part of a plan for its destruction by forces beyond the Community? What reforms are necessary for the EU to become a serious player in the geopolitical conflict? Are such reforms actually a realistic option? With Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg's former Minister for Foreign Affairs and the EU's longest holder of this office, one of its most knowledgeable insiders will talk about the Community's state and perspectives in his speech at Neuhardenberg only a few weeks before the European Parliament elections.
Afterwards, the TV presenter Theo Koll will discuss the situation of the continent in a world order that is falling apart more in-depth with the speaker, as well as the MEP Lena Düpont and Poland's ambassador to Germany Janusz Reiter.
