Bujazzo
Thank you, Peter!

Leader: Jörn Marcussen-Wulff

Germany's national youth orchestra, the Bundesjugendorchester, is a stepping stone for future classical music stars; the Bundesjazzorchester is equally important when it comes to the promotion and development of the country's young jazz musicians. The fact that the ensemble, a classic big band formed by up-and-coming jazz professionals supervised by experienced tutors, performs under a catchy short name proves that it does not always take itself too seriously, despite its pursuit of the high quality standards of a top orchestra. With the Bujazzo, the German Music Council has supported the promotion of Germany's young jazz talents for the past 38 years. It gives them the chance to perform together with many others in a large ensemble, a collaboration experience that smaller formations cannot offer. The Bujazzo is therefore an important incubator for tomorrow's successful jazz musicians. The careers of famous jazz greats such as Till Brönner, Julia Hülsmann, Tom Gaebel, Johanna Summer, Nils Wogram, Alma Naidu, Theresia Philipp and Michael Wollny all began here.

With its programme Thank you, Peter!, the Bujazzo is paying homage to its founding father, who was also its artistic director for many years: Peter Herbolzheimer (1935 – 2010), one of Europe's most influential band leaders, composers and arrangers. To mark what would have been his 90th birthday last year, the Bujazzo has developed a programme together with tutors who have either performed under or with Herbolzheimer that brings the inimitable voice of this legendary big band heavyweight back to life. Besides his own compositions, the programme also includes arrangements by musicians who were associated with the Bujazzo for many years and have contributed to the definition of its sound.
