Katja Ebstein has been a stage performer for over 50 years. Besides the poppy songs and numbers that have made her famous and have become golden oldies, she has always also pursued a wide range of other musical and literary interests. She has sung the great musical and film melodies, has been on TV and has played leading roles at the theatre. The success of the pop songs freed her to experiment with other formats. Even as early as in 1975, she already developed a Heinrich Heine programme entitled Schlage die Trommel und fürchte dich nicht ('Quick, beat the drum, and be not afraid'); with productions such as these and others, she has also been active as a reciter for decades. She has lovingly paid homage to 'her' Berlin, and also chided it in a political way, with couplets by Klabund, Otto Reutter, Friedrich Hollaender, Erich Kästner and Kurt Tucholsky. She has never given a hoot about target audiences and marketing analyses, trends and TV ratings. She does what she thinks is the right thing to do, what she can with a clear conscience, and what she wants to communicate to her audience. Of course, this also includes lyrics about what is currently going on in the world. Sung and recited with her radiant, warm voice that has developed a timbre like polished wood over the years, she reaches our innermost with her songs.
