KARAT
After a band history that spans almost 50 years, KARAT can justifiably be called German rock legends, and with quite a bit of pride, they also definitely view themselves as an East German band that has played its way into the hearts of its fan community with a striking sound and poetic lyrics. After all, the five musicians already united Germany with their songs when it still seemed insurmountably politically divided: in the 1980s, their songs also made it to top of the charts in the western part of the country. And no, Peter Maffay did not actually write the hugely popular hit Über sieben Brücken. The version he recorded together with KARAT vocalist Herbert Dreilich in 1989 was instantly voted radio anthem of the year. However, tracks such as Der Blaue Planet, Schwanenkönig and Jede Stunde, and the freedom song Albatros have long since become German rock and pop history classics. When Herbert Dreilich passed away in 2004, his son Claudius became KARAT's 'new voice'. The outcome: the legend lives on, and is still a band that always creates something new in the course of creatively looking back over the old.
