A concert that involves Goran Bregovic, one of South-East Europe's best-known music stars, guarantees a rollercoaster of emotions, because euphoric one minute and maudlin the next is the usual state of the emotional world of the Balkans. All over the world, Goran Bregovic is the voice and sound of this region, and a representative of its musical diversity. Stirring wind instruments, breakneck speed tempi, complex rhythms, but also a deep melancholy and sadness give the music of this exceptional artist and his Wedding and Funeral Band utter credibility. Born in Sarajevo in 1950 as the son of Serbo-Croatian parents, Bregovic's own origins stand for the Balkans' paradoxical and splintered character. His collaboration with the Yugoslav director Emir Kosturica, whose films would only be half as beautiful without their perfect scores, has made him famous all over the world. Not only in these compositions, Bregovic preserves the musical heritage of the Balkans whilst also tearing down ethnic barriers. Time and again, he shows just how modern and innovative traditional music can sound.
