The Leipzig-based Calmus Ensemble is one of Germany's most successful vocal groups. The quintet's trademark is a soundscape culture that runs like a thread through all of the line-up changes it has seen over the past 25 years: rich facets, homogeneousness, an eye for detail and an interpretation of the music that is close to the lyrics. The concert programmes are designed in such a way that they tell a story, link classical repertoire numbers to musical discoveries and reach out to people. A wide variety of styles and genres is combined with the endeavour to be both serious as well as humorous at the highest musical level.

In its programme of the same title, the Calmus Ensemble approaches Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio from a chamber music angle. Selected chorales from the Oratorio form the spiritual backbone of the concert and enter into an inspiring dialogue with works from various eras and styles that all tell the Christmas story. In this way, the Calmus Ensemble establishes connections between the traditional and the present, between reverential and utterly joyous music.
