The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Brass Ensemble is one of the philharmonic chamber music groups that has performed together the longest. Its members consider their shared interest in also performing as soloists to be equivalent to their day-to-day orchestra work. The ensemble is characterised by the wonderfully nuanced techniques with which its members play their instruments and the fact that, because of their beautiful sound, they prefer the latter to be made in Germany. The standard instrumentation with four trumpets and four trombones may be considered to be authentic for the music of the 16th and the 17th century, which is a key focus of their repertoire.

Of course, the musicians also change their instruments, from B-flat trumpets for the higher notes to bass trumpets and contrabass trombones. From time to time, they also join forces with additional musicians and use other instruments such as the French horn, tuba or drums. This variety makes it possible to perform music from many epochs and styles – all the way to Beatles adaptations. An exceptionally successful concert schedule regularly leads the ensemble to many European music capitals and festival locations as well as tours all the way to Japan; it is also often busy with numerous record, radio and TV productions.
