Maria durch ein‘ Dornwald ging
('Mary walked through
a wood of thorn')
amarcord – that is a capella singing of the utmost perfection, that is five male voices in perfectly coordinated tones and perfect harmony, that is outstanding vocal art and musical poetry, sometimes serious, sacral and solemn, sometimes humorous, uplifting or jazzy. The singers, who are all former members of the Thomanerchor Leipzig, are unanimously celebrated for their virtuosity and variety at the countless concerts they give all over the world. The ECHO and OPUS Klassic award winners effortlessly cross the boundaries between different eras, styles and modes of expression. The quintet presents songs from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque and the European Romanticist eras as naturally as it does contemporary music or arrangements of folk songs and jazz standards.
This year's Christmas programme consists of seasonal motets and international Christmas carols. The spectrum ranges from Renaissance Christmas vocal to well-known German Christmas hymns such as Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging or In dulci jubilo and Christmas carols from distant countries such as Trinidad & Tobago, Finland and Nigeria.
