Julie & Julia
based on two true stories
A film by Nora Ephron, adapted from a novel by Julie Powell
with Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina and others
introduced by Dieter Kosslick
Does cooking make you happy? Julie Powell would doubtlessly answer this question with an empathic 'yes'. Shortly before her 30th birthday, the frustrated New Yorker comes to a decision: she is going to cook every single recipe from the classic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking by the American TV chef Julia Childs in the space of one year. In the course of this, she discovers more than just the art of cooking: she regularly recounts her experiences in her blog, sharing not only her culinary disasters and triumphs, but also her insights into life.
The film, a true feast, links two stories: whilst Julie – brilliantly portrayed by Amy Adams – is looking for a new life purpose as she prepares boeuf bourguignon and bouillabaisse, the film constantly jumps back to the fifties and shows how the diplomat's wife Julia Child discovered and perfected her passion for the French cuisine in Paris and Marseille. Meryl Streep adopted the flamboyant mannerisms and bizarre quirks of the iconic American chef with obvious relish. Refined with delicious ingredients, her enjoyable escapades make this comedy a real treat. Sometimes, the way to the heart of an audience is also through the stomach!
