History is being made. Only Alex looks backwards. Shortly before the fall of the Berlin wall, his mother, a citizen of the GDR through and through, falls into a coma after a heart attack and sleeps through the ultimate triumph of capitalism. When she miraculously opens her eyes again after eight months, she has woken up in a new country. She has missed the former GDR being overrun by western cars and fast food chains; she did not witness how Coca Cola simply washed away decades of socialism. She must never find out any of this: Her weak heart is too frail, she would not survive the excitement. Alex doesn't even have time to catch his breath. To save his mother, he is forced to resurrect the GDR on the 79 square metres of their apartment. He soon realises that this plan is more difficult to put into practice than he thought.
