Falling in Love Again

A musical-literary revue

with Dagmar Manzel and Max Hopp

at the piano: Adam Benzwi

arranged by Gerhard Ahrens

Love is probably the number one song lyric theme, usually unrequited love, rather than the love parents feel for their children, the love due to our fellow man or the love someone might feel for their god or a nation. No, love songs are all about the kind of love that takes over everything, that either makes you ecstatically happy or terribly unhappy. It is surprising how many words and sounds can or apparently have to be written about love, and have been at all times, again and again. You can listen to them over and over: the old melodies, the music hall songs, the arias and the love stories told in the form of songs by travelling singers, and not least also the musical adaptations of great love poems. The odd thing is: those who scoff the most, such as the great German poet Heinrich Heine, for example, have also written the most beautiful love songs although sometimes, these are also merely about someone in love behaving foolishly.

Ever since their duo performance in Eine Frau, die weiß, was sie will! at the Komische Oper, Dagmar Manzel and Max Hopp are revered in Berlin. Accompanied by Adam Benzwi, the conductor of the Berlin production, they will be singing the most beautiful love songs, from the Romantic era to the 1960s, from Heinrich Heine to Kurt Tucholsky, from Robert Schumann to Jacques Brel. And when Dagmar Manzel sings about the longing a loving woman feels, she communicates such an intimate moment that the audience holds its breath.
