The FAZ referred to him as ‘without a doubt, the greatest and most accomplished living jazz violin player’. Adam Bałdych learned to play his instrument at the age of nine and was soon considered a wunderkind. He decided to play jazz when he was thirteen years old; his international career took off when he was only sixteen. The young Pole soon became one of Europe’s most interesting jazz violinists. He is appreciated worldwide, not only for his excellent technique but also for his unique sound and his compositions, which intentionally reference the musical traditions of his home country and blur the boundaries between classical music and jazz. He recorded his first album Imaginary Room in 2012 with a Scandinavian all-star band whose members included Jacob Karlzon and Lars Danielsson, for example. It was released by the renowned ACT MUSIC label and won the ECHO Jazz award in the ‘International Instrumentalist of the Year’ category in 2013.

Sacrum Profanum, the Polish jazz star’s latest album, is a new beginning and at the same time a return to the old and familiar, because despite a carefree willingness to experiment and technically breath-taking lines, he also looked for harmony, confidence, truthfulness and timeless values in our increasingly faster, self-focused times. He found the ‘timeless beauty of mystic music’ in the ‘saintly simplicity’ of Hildegard von Bingen, the Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis and the avant-gardist Sofia Gubaidulina. This material inspired a masterpiece of contemporary jazz that reaches out far beyond its limits.
