Roberto Fonseca III

Roberto Fonseca, piano
Ruly Hernández, drums
Yandy Martínez, bass

‘Roberto Fonseca is one of the world’s great pianists and one of the finest of Cuba’s new generation of musicians.’

(Evening Standard)

Roberto Fonseca has intensively explored the roots of Cuban music over many years. Time and again, his compositions cite African and Latin American motifs, as well as elements of European classical music. Together with the unique way of life on this Caribbean island, all of these facets have created the distinctive sound of Cuban music. Roberto Fonseca is currently its most important international representative; he explores it yet he is also one of its creators. He appreciates this melange that is found nowhere else in the world and does everything to preserve it yet also sensitively develops it further, following in the footsteps of his artistic ancestors.

In the course of his career, Roberto Fonseca has collaborated with many great artists, including Mayra Andrade, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Nils Petter Molvær. Together with Omara Portuondo and Ibrahim Ferrer, he was a member of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club, which made ‘Son Cubano’ (Cuban music) world-famous overnight. Together with Ruly Hernández on the drums and Yandy Martínez on the bass, Roberto Fonseca tells musical stories from the past and present of this island and its rich traditions. He and his companions do this in such an infectious and ‘Caribbean’ way that it is impossible to sit still once the trio starts to play.
