Andreas Steinhöfel’s heroes Rico and Oscar couldn’t be any more different. Rico, who calls himself ‘deeply gifted’, because ‘things are always tumbling out of my mind’, meets the highly gifted Oscar. What follows is the funniest and most exciting whodunnit for children and young adults since Erich Kästner’s Emil and the Detectives.

All Rico was actually supposed to do is to keep a holiday diary. A task that’s difficult enough for someone who sometimes loses track of one thing, or a couple of things, or things altogether. When he meets Oscar, who wears a blue helmet, and they set off in hot pursuit of the notorious ‘Aldi Kidnapper’ together, the jumble of thoughts in his mind gets even more difficult to unravel. However, in Oscar’s company, even the ‘Deep Shades’ become less frightening. It is the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

The author, translator and reviewer Andreas Steinhöfel is one of Germany’s best known writers of literature for children and young adults. He has won numerous awards, including the Erich-Kästner-Preis literary award in 2009, and is as well- known as authors such as Peter Rühmkorf, Loriot, Robert Gernhardt and Tomi Ungerer. In 2013, he was the recipient of the special lifetime achievement award presented each year to an outstanding writer of fiction for children and young adults by the jury that also awards the renowned German Children’s Literature Award (Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis).

Milan Peschel studied drama at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art before he joined the cast of the Volksbühne Berlin theatre, where he appeared in productions by Frank Castorf and Dimiter Gotscheff. He then went on to perform at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg and the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin, and has also directed plays at various theatres. He is equally well known for his appearances in numerous movie and TV productions, including Andreas Dresen’s Stopped on Track, Detlev Buck’s Hands off Mississippi, and the film adaptations of the stories about Rico and Oscar.
