Of all fine art genres, the portrait reflects the sitter’s character and the human condition most directly. It illustrates not only the disposition of the person depicted but also that of the portraying artist as well as the respective social and economic conditions.

Following on from the major exhibition Portrait with series of photographs from the second half the 20th century held at Schloss Neuhardenberg in 2016, the current show now focuses on ten more recent perspectives.

The spectrum of their artistic strategies is wide: the artists’ varied approaches range from sensitive portraits taken in private surroundings to documentary-style series that picture the residents of a particular environment or a social or professional background, or address the possibilities offered by portraits and the respective conditions. The exhibition, previously on display at Kunstverein Oldenburg and Kunstraum Düsseldorf, was curated by Laurenz Berges and Gertrude Wagenfeld-Pleister.

A temporary art Intervention will be shown at Schloss Neuhardenberg in addition to the exhibition Portrait II; it was developed in collaboration with C/O Berlin. The Schloss Neuhardenberg foundation will be presenting three further artistic photography perspectives here with the series Barracks /Woodlands /Horses by Laurenz Berges, Bernhard Fuchs and Jitka Hanzlová.
