Johannes Brahms talks to Johannes Brahms

by Wolfgang Berthold
based on an idea by Wolfgang Knauer

Max Hopp, narrator
Tianwa Yang, violin
Sebastian Knauer, piano

‘Unfortunately not by me’ – this apologetic comment is the punchline of an anecdote about an event in Johannes Brahms’s life. The great waltz aficionado once wrote underneath an excerpt from Johann Strauss II’s Blue Danube: ‘Unfortunately not by Johannes Brahms’. This anecdote and other stories from different periods of a turbulent and not always easy life are the subject of a conversation between the old and the young Brahms – both played by the extremely versatile Max Hopp. Underlined by some of his compositions, the evening draws a picture of a life which started in a humble home and went on to be governed by self-doubt and the love for an unattainable woman. However, Brahms was far too much of a no-nonsense northerner (he was born in Hamburg) to waste his time with complaints. In fact, his sense of humour was one of his most endearing qualities. The focus is on Johannes Brahms the person, on the love and disappointments, doubts, setbacks and triumphs of a great artist.

The evening is based on a concept devised by the satirist, music lover, presenter and author Wolfgang Knauer, who passed away in January 2018, for his son, the celebrated pianist Sebastian Knauer.  Director Wolfgang Berthold developed this concept further, and it will now performed in words and music on the stage of Neuhardenberg’s Schinkel Church by the actor Max Hopp and the young star violinist Tianwa Yang as well as Sebastian Knauer.
