The saxophonist, composer, arranger and band leader Günther Fischer is one of the great German film score composers of international renown. His work has contributed considerably to the way jazz has developed in Germany. He formed his quartet in 1967. It soon grew somewhat and evolved into the legendary Günther Fischer Quintett, which lives on as his band today, making it one of the most successful and enduring German jazz bands. Günther Fischer was one of the musicians who helped jazz to become less provincial and insular in the GDR of the 1970s and 1980s. Besides his involvement with the band, he also composed, arranged and performed music together with GDR greats such as Manfred Krug, Uschi Brüning and Veronika Fischer, for example. He has written the scores for over 200 movies, has composed the music for such successful German television series as Der letzte Zeuge, has written musicals and music for plays. Also unforgotten is his song Solo Sunny, which he wrote for the film of the same name.
On stage with Günther Fischer as his guests will be his daughter Laura Fischer and the director of the film Gundermann, Andreas Dresen. Günther Fischer has encountered many interesting people in the course of his eventful life; it may therefore well happen that the odd ‘good acquaintance’ drops by and joins him on stage.
