Jedermann reloaded is largely based on Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s mystery play. However, it is also something completely different: A breathtaking mix of outstanding acting, euphoria, rock ‘n roll and the art of transformation that also manages to never lose sight of the play’s profound morality. Philipp Hochmair has turned the mystery play into a contemporary piece. He and his fellow performers have taken the title’s ‘reloaded’ quite literally: They have reloaded the old, ‘to all intents and purposes dead’, lyrics like a weapon which they then proceed to fire. Hochmair is on stage with the band Die Elektrohand Gottes and plays all of the characters, driven by guitar riffs and experimental sounds. He is above all a 21st century Jedermann; a worryingly familiar contemporary character in the guise of a rock star with cigar and beer bottle, a belt with skull buckle and a crucifix on a chain dangling on his naked chest whose unquenchable thirst for money, love and intoxication will ultimately destroy him.
However, Philipp Hochmair also plays the mother, the love interest, the ‘good deeds’, faith and death. A few props and gestures, a different register, a certain pose are enough to turn the bon vivant into one of the other characters in the play, which relentlessly exposes its ambivalence. Hochmair’s smouldering performance sets the title character’s burning desire for life alight.
