Alone in Berlin
by Hans Fallada
read by Jutta Hoffmann and Jörg Gudzuhn

arranged by Gerhard Ahrens

The 20 July 2019 will mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg’s assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler. Neuhardenberg’s last aristocratic owner, Carl-Hans Graf von Hardenberg, was actively involved in the preparations. Members of the circle headed by Stauffenberg held several clandestine meetings at Neuhardenberg, inside the castle as well as in the park. After the failed assassination attempt, Carl-Hans von Hardenberg was arrested, like so many of the others involved,  by the Gestapo on 24 July 1944. On his arrest, he attempted to commit suicide in order escape what was to come, barely surviving the attempt.

In memory of the German resistance and the group of conspirators headed by Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg, the local parish church Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Neuhardenberg and the Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg will be holding a remembrance and prayer service by Carl-Hans von Hardenberg’s graveside, followed by a reading from Hans Fallada’s Alone in Berlin.

The actors Jutta Hoffmann and Jörg Gudzuhn will read from this haunting novel about an ordinary couple and their resistance against the Nazi regime, which is based on a true story discovered by Hans Fallada in the Gestapo records after 1945. It prompted him to write this moving account of the Quangels, a married couple that actively resists the inhumane regime in their own particular way after their son is killed in the war in order to save their own souls.
