Jan Garbarek is one of Europe’s most important contemporary jazz musicians and has been considered an outstanding exponent of Scandinavian jazz for decades. In the course of his career, he has gradually moved increasingly further away from pure jazz, not least also due to the influence of traditional Norwegian music. He has consistently developed his own inimitable sound which reflects his personality in such a concentrated form that it is revealed as soon as he strikes the first note, unique and unforgettable. With vivid melody lines that run through incredibly generous soundscapes, Garbarek’s compositions are of an almost surreal luminosity. From absolute silence to expressive outbreaks, he paints pictures with his at times reduced, at times soft, dancing or hymnal sounds; his tunes are simple and catchy yet at the same time also highly complex. ‘The human voice is my ideal,’ says Jan Garbarek, and there is probably hardly another saxophonist that has come as close to this ideal as this artist from Norway.
The musicians accompanying him have internalised this artistry and made it their own. In this way, everyone contributes to the big picture: His long-term musical companion Rainer Brüninghaus at the piano, the Indian Trilok Gurtu, who is a magician on the drums and has already performed a few of his own projects at Neuhardenberg in the past, and the Brazilian Yuri Daniel on the double bass. Together, they represent a well-matched ensemble that lifts Jan Garbarek’s music to new heights.
