Frida Kahlo is possibly the most internationally famous artist Mexico – if not all of Latin America – has ever produced. Her striking appearance contributed much to her legendary status, as did her illness after a serious bus accident at the age of eighteen, her suffering, her two marriages to the world-famous painter Diego Rivera, his infidelity and her affairs, her revolutionary zeal and passionate nationalism.
With her unique, gentle yet also gravelly voice, the great and multi-award winning actress Suzanne von Borsody adds a new, authentic dimension to the ‘Kahlo legend’. Through letters, poems and diary entries, she lets the great painter speak in her own words. These are intimate, frank confessions that evidence her great sense of humour and irrepressible joie de vivre, as well as her inner conflicts. Frida Kahlo always wore her heart on her sleeve. The language she uses is extremely unrestrained, the first step to unconditional honesty. These are imaginative testaments of an unusual life.
Suzanne von Borsody’s reading will be accompanied by the melancholy yet joyous sound of Mexican music, provided by the trio AZUL. The three musicians are some of the regular members of the popular Latin American band Grupo Sal. Together, Suzanne von Borsody and AZUL draw a passionate and very touching musical-literary portrait.
