F. – centenary rambles

Exhibition

A GEDOK Brandenburg exhibition
in cooperation with Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg

under the aegis of the federal state of Brandenburg’s Minister of Science, Research and Culture

sponsored by the German Savings Banks Association cultural fund

The writer Fontane has left a long-lasting impact, and the subjects his works focused on are still remarkably current: identity-defining observations of people and landscapes, stories about gaining a higher social status and being relegated to a lower, about morals and passion, about awakening and independence, about alienation and ostracism, about culture clashes, about power and careerism, about love and happiness destroyed by social conventions.

To mark the bicentenary of Fontane’s birth and the founding of GEDOK Brandenburg (‘Gemeinschaft der Künstlerinnen und Kunstfördernden in Brandenburg’, the Brandenburg society of artists and art sponsors) twenty-five years ago, GEDOK Brandenburg and the Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg have jointly organised the exhibition project F. – Jahrhundertwanderungen, which examines these subjects more closely. On show at Neuhardenberg will be selected works from around twenty-five artists, chosen by a jury, that belong to the nationwide GEDOK network. Their creations explore the influence Fontane still has on works by contemporary artists and highlight starting points and commonalities in Fontane’s oeuvre that contemporary artists can refer to in order to address these subjects from a current – female – viewpoint. It is particularly this individual, at times provocative perspective of female artists that unlocks new approaches which go beyond the familiar patterns of interpretation and question the traditional views. Fontane’s subjects and female characters, with their multilayered, almost timeless conflicts, turned out to be a rich source of inspiration for a lively visual arts discourse.
