The Lay of Love and Death of Cornet Christopher Rilke tells the story of the 18-year-old soldier Christoph Rilke, who fought against the Turks in 17th century Hungary and died in an attempt to save the regimental flag from the enemy. With its motifs of youth’s impulsiveness and hunger for life, love and death, Rilke’s prose poem was particularly popular between the two world wars. The work is defined by sadness about the senselessness of young soldiers losing their lives on the battlefields and the parallel glorification of their heroic deaths. Victor Ullmann (1898-1944) based his composition, which he wrote in Theresienstadt concentration camp and which was probably his last work, on a sensitively reduced version of Rilke’s storyline. Shortly after its completion, the composer was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where he was killed.

The legendary voice and stage actor Christian Brückner will be narrating this in all aspects touching work. Brückner has won many prizes. He is the voice of Robert de Niro in the dubbed German versions of the actor’s films and is also well-known for his audio books and literary stage programmes. Daniel Heide is a popular accompanist and chamber musician. His recording with the baritone Andrè Schuen of lieder by Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf and Frank Martin won an ECHO classical music prize in 2016.
