Concert I

Sonnabend 10.06.2006, 16:00 Uhr Schinkel-Kirche

Admission: € 16.- / reduced € 10.-

This homage to the great Hungarian composer György Kurtág on the occasion of his 80th birthday, places his works in a musical dialogue with compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the 250th anniversary of whose birth is being celebrated this year.

Writer Péter Nádas, composers Amos Elkana, Péter Eötvös, Adriana Hölszky and Márton Illés, together with artist Alexander Polzin, will pay tribute to the award-winning composer at this birthday reception.

Kurtág’s oeuvre has set new standards, in particular for chamber music and is characterised by his masterful grasp of how to speak volumes with just a few notes; each note is redolent with weight and substance, his music burns with emotional intensity.

That also holds true for »Játekók« (»Games«), a 1973 collection of short pieces for piano. The collection has been performed frequently since then and Kurtág also draws on it as a ›musical notebook‹, providing the building blocks for his more complex major works. The highlight of the weekend will be Márta and György Kurtág’s performance of pieces from this renowned collection in the Schinkel Church.
