The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

Concert

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, or ‘The Ukes’ for short, is a very British phenomenon. With stoical miens, the musicians sit in a semi-circle and play their way through music history with virtuosic instrumental anarchy. The habitual seriousness of their performance is in stunning contrast to their strange instruments. Despite the limited musical scope of the four-string mini guitars, they manage to give us some surprising insights into the inner world of the music, revealing the beauty of popular as well as the emptiness of sophisticated compositions. With wit and crazy ideas, they take their ‘bonsai guitars’ far beyond their natural limits. They perform clever arrangements of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries as well as grunge hymns by Nirvana and spaghetti western soundtracks, enlivened by charming announcements and rough-and-ready a cappella pieces of amazing vocal quality.

The Ukes have already performed literally everywhere: At the Queen’s private birthday party, the BBC Proms, the Sydney Opera House and the Carnegie Hall in New York. They last visited Neuhardenberg in 2012 and are now back with a cheerful, virtuosic and not in the least pathetic tour through the genres, from post-punk to classical to all sorts of popular songs which they tackle without the help of percussion instruments, a keyboard or electronic gadgets, with nothing but their ukuleles and their voices. Despite this, their musical ‘trip with hand luggage only’ leaves nothing to be desired.
