Be cheeky, and wild, and wonderful!

Petra Zieser reads from Astrid Lindgren’s most beautiful children’s books

‘Ronia,’ said Birk, ‘you realise that we are free? So free that it makes you want to burst with laughter?’ (from Ronia the Robber’s Daughter)

In her autobiographical childhood memoir, Astrid Lindgren wrote that the freedom and security she enjoyed made her childhood what it was. Her famous children’s books about Ronia the Robber’s Daughter, Pippi Longstocking or Emil of Lönneberga and the funny stories about The Six Bullerby Children all reflect this feeling of freedom as the fundamental motif. The children in Lindgren’s books are cheeky, wild and wonderful, and when they play outdoors, they are beside yet also inside themselves. All of Astrid Lindgren’s world-famous books illustrate what she fought for all of her life: The fact that children have the right to develop their personalities freely and to grow up in a safe place where they can enjoy the freedom that is so important for their development.

The actress Petra Zieser, who has appeared in films and on TV as well as on stage in the play Linie 1 at the GRIPS Theater in Berlin and later on at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, for example, to great success, has brought along a cornucopia full of selected summer stories for young and old about and by Astrid Lindgren which she will read in the Garden Hall of Schloss Neuhardenberg, where the landscaped gardens can be glimpsed in the background. The texts explore the overwhelming but also as yet hesitant desire for freedom which maybe only children can truly have and which adults sometimes wish they could rediscover.
